docile and loveable, comforting and reassuring. wherever GIZMO goes, he makes sure his companion knows GIZMO is there for them.

orderly and unimposing, brave and unyielding. GIZMO keeps his living space neat and tidy, and he doesn’t take up more than he needs. when the situation calls for courage, he will not hesitate.

resourceful and cunning, at rare occasions cutthroat ( but only if you push him too far ). while generally good-natured, GIZMO fights back. to quote the great RAMBO, “ to survive a war you gotta become war ”.

BACKGROUND:

Centuries ago on another planet, Mogturmen had set out to produce a creature that was adaptable to any climate and condition, one that could easily reproduce itself, was gentle and highly intelligent… the galactic powers sent Mogwai to every inhabitable planet in the universe, their purpose being to inspire alien beings with their peaceful spirit and intelligence and to instruct them in the ways of living without violence and possible extinction.

mogwai, or gremlins, are born like horses — breathe the first mouthful of air and be ready to gallop. everything is coded in their dna — what to do, how to do, and who to trust.

GIZMO is the only well-meaning mogwai on earth. his species, though peacemakers by design, turned out to be highly unstable — only one in a thousand mogwais seem to retain the recessive positive attributes as planned.

and there he is, the one-in-a-thousand GIZMO, gentle and intelligent but ultimately a distinct threat to everyone around him.

GIZMO understood one thing early on: his fate often depends on his handler, whose actions would then determine the rise or fall of their civilisation or even planet.

centuries have given GIZMO a rich repertoire, though not many of his travel had a happy ending. not all handlers were good; in fact, most of them ignored the rules of mogwai, and some treated GIZMO as a source of entertainment. poor behaviour led to disastrous ends — after countless accidents, GIZMO finally landed on earth.

there he suffered, too, until he crossed the great china sea, meeting his fated BABA. BABA, a chinese merchant who lived in chinatown, was the best. he kept his room dark, water-free, and made sure he ate well before midnight. for fourty years, BABA’s gentle care kept GIZMO happy and the earth safe — then BABA’s grandson gave GIZMO away for quick cash.

oh, capitalism, the greatest evil of all.

this turn of events brought GIZMO to his second fated owner. GIZMO was not the name his baba gave him, but one he eventually assumed. he had always preferred to think that BILLY gave him the name instead of the stinky money-in-brain self-proclaimed inventor, but nothing would change the fact that he is BILLY’s GIZMO.

on christmas eve, 1984, GIZMO, BILLY and KATE defeated the gang of morphed gremlins lead by STRIPE, a mogwai spawned from GIZMO upon contact with water. enraged and disappointed, BABA came to retrieve GIZMO, and GIZMO returned under his care until his passing six years later.

fate brought GIZMO back to BILLY’s arms, though not without the typical dramatics. he then stayed with BILLY for the longest time, living with the couple as part of the family.

PERSONALITY:

while she seems aloof and apathetic to most, she always acts on purpose — anything outside of her goals means nothing. a sister at mondstadt’s church of favonius, she skips choir practices simply because it bores her. she leaves without notice, and never works overtime. her attire suggests a rebellious and eccentric soul, looking nothing like a traditional nun. she is in no ways docile, though her sharp honesty stems from a good place.

she cares about people, though on her own terms and in her own ways — back in mondstadt, she treks the snowy mountains of dragonspine at night to keep an eye on suspicious forces despite freezing temperatures. her intuition proves right often but one might consider her a conspiracy theorist with intense paranoia.

BACKGROUND:

what does it mean to be a sister of the church? she can’t even say their archon’s name right. ( is it barbositos? baristos? does it matter? ) she is often absent from choir practice or reading groups, hiding deep in the snowy mountains and away from others. she doesn’t talk about her family, so people presume she doesn’t have one; she doesn’t talk about her life, so many suggest she has none too.

they were wrong, of course — maybe they knew, maybe it’s easier to pretend — but often rosaria wishes they weren’t. she doesn’t remember her exact birthplace except it was far and among the mountains. raised by the very bandits who tore her village apart and stole her, she spent her childhood as a servant and a tool. if not for the knights of favonius, she might have never left that path.

she was brought to mondstadt and advised to cleanse her soul in the light of their archon. she settled but never blended in — she belonged to the moonlit nights, while everyone else basked in sunlight. to protect mondstadt’s people, to repay their kindness, she doesn’t care what her hands will have to kill.

BACKGROUND:

born in qiqihar, northeast of mainland china, she carried the name of a wuxia character, presumably her mother’s favourite. as all kids go, she was curious and daring, touching everything she saw from shiny light bulbs to burning stoves – it gave her parents a great scare, but nothing was more horrifying to them than finding their baby girl unharmed after all.

fire can’t touch her but men can. her fire resistance was perceived as demonic, and her parents spent years attempting to purge her from the non-existent possession. visits to temples, charms, spells, and many other superstitious rituals made her childhood hell.

school was her only escape but safety wasn’t guaranteed even there. evils came in all forms, and disinformation was the rampant agent in printed and digital media. while school claimed this was education, she felt sick every time she watched her classmates chant slogans demanding unconditional loyalty and love towards their motherland – she loved her country but something was amiss.

one day, min showed up. min was a free soul with daring words, many of her ideas challenged authorities and posed threat to her own family. daozi crushed on her hard, and she on daozi too. together they created a tiny haven, a place where authority could not see.

she was the best part of her childhood, but all good things end. her parents were desperate to ‘cure’ her, so desperate they edged on murder. narrowly escaping death, wukong entered her life, introducing himself to be the demon monkey straight out of the myths. when she accidentally killed a police officer with bad intentions, wukong extracted her from this abusive environment but also away from her first love.

wukong knew why fire couldn’t hurt her, and she finally understood why she caught fire whenever she was angry. it took her a while to wrap her mind around the story – the mighty princess iron fan and her fire-breathing son red were her ancestors – but she refused to carry burdens from the past.

she spent about four years with wukong, travelling across the globe. he wanted to find her ancestral heirloom – the fan wielded by the princess of scorched lands, the fan capable of starting fires but also putting out godly eternal flames – and the journey left her detached from mortality and reality. eventually, they agreed to part ways and she stayed in the states while he kept moving from place to place.

she never planned to stay but caroline, a phd and beauty salon owner with a heart of gold, changed her mind. now she stays with caroline while running her main and side businesses, trying to make sense out of her chaotic life, one day at a time.

inheritance to the MORIARTY family is a curse. passed on to only their daughters, the ability to SEE PAST THE PHYSICAL WORLD has driven divides between mothers and their own daughters. the generational trauma, coupled with the inevitable weight of motherhood, was what eventually brought MOIRA’s mother to forfeit her rights as a parent.

MOIRA doesn’t remember much of her childhood, but she remembers the intense heartbreak when her single mother kissed her goodbye one last time. she knows this is for the best, but she doesn’t remember how she — or they — reached this conclusion.

she spent some years in the foster system, years she would rather not talk about. all the court cases and mishandling brewed in her a severe distrust in authority. eventually, she landed on the smithsonian’s radar, and that was where she met DR QUENTIN WHITTLE.

apparently, her powers were of scientific interest, and the smithsonian was wealthy enough to give her a better life as a research subject. despite finding their research methods laughable, she cooperated — at least nobody called her crazy, and they funded her top surgery and hormone therapy all the way through adolescence.

after all the years bonding with QUENTIN, who had always fought for her rights in or out of the organisation, she agreed to assist him in his supernatural and folklore research. QUENTIN also promised to provide her with whatever gadget and healthcare she needed to navigate her powers safely.

ROXYANNA joined them a year later, and the trio would move around depending on the research topic of the time.
